A graduate of University High School, Urbana and Eastern Illinois University, Coach Walters gained experience at University High (Urbana) and Unity H.S. (Tolono) previous to coming to CHS. From 1988 through 1991 he coached both boys and girls in cross-country. From 1992 through 2000 he was in charge of girls cross-country exclusively and has coached only the boys for the last six years. His girls’ XC teams won 4 conference, 7 regional, and 3 sectional titles. From 1996 through 2000 Illinois Prep Top Times consistently ranked the girls in the top 15 in the state, an honor usually reserved for the suburban schools. In addition, they qualified for the state meet 9 times in 13 years. The pinnacle of this success came in 1998 when the girls finished 5th in the state. Under his leadership in the past six years the boys have won 5 Twin City titles, numerous invitational titles, back-to-back conference and 3 consecutive regional titles. In 2004 they were sectional runners-up, losing to O’Fallon by 1 point. They have qualified for state 2 times after having never qualified previous to the 2000 season. Coach Walters is a USATF Level I certified coach and presently serves as the president for the Illinois Track and Cross Country Association. He has been named girls cross country Coach of the Year 6 times by ITCCCA-South.

USATF Master All-American 5K.  Downers Grove South 1971-72 ,Quincy High CC & Track Coach 1972- 1993, Millikin Univ. 1996-2005, Mt Zion Girls Track Track 2006 MacArthur High CC and Track 2006.  Angelo was inducted into the ITCCCA Hall of Fame in 2008. Quincy CC teams 1984and 1985 finished 12th in state. 24 all state CC and Track. Had 14 all Americans at Millikin during tenure including two national champions.

Mike Garcia has been coaching track and cross country for 31 years, 22 of those years have been spent at Lanphier. He has coached 7 individual state champions and 2 state champion relay teams. His teams have earned three state trophies. His commitment to the sport is ever present as he serves ITCCCA-South as a representative to the IHSA.

Steve Destri has been the head track & field coach at Normal West High School since the school opened in 1995.  He spent ten years as the girls head coach and is in his 6th year as the boys head coach.  He has been the head cross country coach at Normal West for the past four years.  His cross country teams have won 6 out 8 Big 12 Conference titles during this time.  Prior to Normal West he coached at Parkside Junior High School where he is in his 24th year teaching 7th grade social studies.  He was instrumental in bringing the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Cross Country Meet to Normal’s Maxwell Park in 1994.  He has been the meet manager of the IESA state meet for 17 years.  He holds the following USATF Coaching Education certificates: Level One, Level Two (Endurance and Jumps) and Level 3 in Endurance.

Coach James ran at Sparta High School for Mark North and attended McKendree University.  Coach James started coaching at O’Fallon in 1993 as assistant cross country.  In 1997, he took over as head girls cross country coach.  In his 15 years as head coach, the team has won 8 conference titles, 7 regional titles, 3 sectional titles and qualified for state 11 times.  In 2002, Coach James became assistant girls track coach.  He took over as head girls track coach in 2006.  Since taking over as head coach, the track team has won 2 conference titles, 1 sectional title, and had numerous state medalists.

Belfred Clark, Senior Meet Director

Belfred Clark is a former World Class athlete that attended the University of Tennessee from 1982-87.  As a Tennessee Volunteer, Belfred set the Freshman Record that is still current in the 400m hurdles.  While astounding for a freshman, he has fond memories of the experience of qualifying and participating in the 1984 Olympic Trials and representing the United States Pan Am Jr. Team in Nassau, Bahamas.  His winning time at the Jr. National meet in Los Angeles of 49.45 remained a meet record for 24 years.

His coaching expereince began in 1987 at John Marshall High School, his ama mater.  He has combined coaching education and study with his competitive successes to help coach athletes at all levels.  Clark has coached age-group, high school, NJCAA, and NCAA Division II and III levels.  The successes of his former athletes include All-Americans, Event Champions, Team Championships, and post season elite team membership.

Belfred is ASEP and USATF Level I certified.  He has served as Umpired for both the IHSA Boys and Girls State Championships.  Belfred continues to maintain the vision of the ITCCCA-South association and is committed to the advancement of the sport overall.
